With that said, this receiver sounds so good with apple air play its crazy. I got this hooked up on new years eve and literally spend 4 hours new years day listening to music from my phone and itunes on my laptop. FYI to use airplay you have to network you receiver and then go in the top of itunes and enable airplay.

Before this receiver I had an Onkyo 509 in my living room and it sounded ok, but was 80watts rms. I didnt like listening to music on it as it didn't drive my Klipsch 53 speakers as good as my 809 in my theater room running each speaker (Klipsch 63) on reference amps...of course it would sound the same. With the AVR 1700 my music on the smaller 2 klipsch speakers upstairs with (3, 5 1/4) drivers sounds just as good as in my basement with 2 klipsch towers running off individual amps and a Onkyo 809.

The music actually sounds like I installed one speaker to play the music and one for the vocals for each channel. There is a lot of separation and it makes my Klipsch speakers sound like they cost 2x as much as they did. The auto calibration is complex as it sets distance, delay, volume, and eq in about 5 min. I can actually hear it adjusting each speaker then checking it to the other speakers then checking its eq points. With all my Onkyo receivers I have to boost the center about 4db, with this one I have to boost the rears about 4db.

There is very good separation and the avr 1700 pushes my speakers way better than 90watts rms or whatever this thing is rated at. I did have to play with the sub volume after calibration and boost the treble +2 and bass -2 only for my cable input. When you hear drums, you can actually tell what type of drum it is. It really sounds like you are in a recording studio where the Onkyo's sound like you are maybe at a concert. Both are good, but with music, Harman surprised me.
